Who invented NFC?
Who invented NFC?
Near Field Communication (NFC) is based on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). The electronics companies Sony and Philips took the RFID concept further and eventually developed NFC technology together.
But Near Field Communication (NFC) has actually been around for much longer. Officially, NFC is based on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) developed by Charles Walton. The interesting thing about both technologies is that they can enable contactless data exchange between devices. The most important facts about NFC are recorded here once again:
-
In 1983, American scientist Charles Walton received several patents for RFID technology. Since then, RFID can be traced back to him, but many people participated in the development of the technology.
-
2002 the NFC technology was officially introduced by the two electrical companies Sony & Philips. For the development, they used the knowledge gained from the use of RFID. The plan was to use NFC primarily in payment systems.
-
NFC was recognized as an official standard by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in 2003, making it a standard to improve products and services.
-
In 2004, Nokia, Sony & Philips joined forces to form the "NFC Forum" to gain awareness and promote the new technology.
-
2006 the first NFC tag was developed, in the same year the first nfc enabled cell phone "Nokia 6131" was released.
