Can the content of NFC tags be protected against overwriting?
Losing data by overwriting NFC tags is annoying. So is there a write protection for this?
Yes, content can be protected against overwriting. The manufacturer usually sets a lock against overwriting for pre-programmed tags. If you want to write to NFC tags yourself, you can set up write protection in various NFC apps.
It would be upsetting if third parties could overwrite an NFC tag without being asked and previously stored data would thus be lost. To avoid this, there is a lock function in pretty much every NFC app that can be used to write to NFC tags.
In the NFC21 Tools app for iOS, you can lock tags in the tag options so that they cannot be overwritten. One selects the desired tag under Tag Types and then, by clicking the lock icon at the bottom of the screen, can additionally lock the NFC tag. In the NFC Tag Writer NXP app for Android, the option to lock the NFC tag can be found directly in the start menu under "Protect".
However, it is important to know that the write protection is permanent and cannot be unlocked. An alternative to this is to set password protection, which some NFC tag types support.
For products of our portals such as the v-Card or Dogtap portal, this write-protection is already set by us in advance, since the included link uniquely connects the NFC tag to the online portal and is crucial for the function. Information can then be conveniently edited via the account in the respective portal.
