How much memory does an NFC tag have?
This always depends on the NFC chip used. There are NFC chips with a memory of only 38 bytes up to 8192 bytes. Therefore, the memory size of the chip should be taken into account when selecting an NFC tag. However, it is important to note that more memory is not automatically better.
The MIFARE Ultralight EV1, for example, has only 38 bytes available. The MIFARE series also offers large sizes, such as the MIFARE DESFire EV3 8k with 8192 bytes. These NFC chips are used for locking systems and require special encoding of the content.
Those looking for an NFC tag for personal use and preferring larger memory should consider NTAG216 tags. These tags offer 868 bytes of memory and can also be written with more information, such as longer text messages. However, it is cheaper and easier to store a URL on a smaller NFC tag and retrieve the detailed data online. Here, even the smallest sizes, such as those of the NTAG213, are usually sufficient.
