Can I use the AirTag with other NFC apps?
I would like to describe the airtag with another NFC app as shortcuts, e.g. [NFC21 Tools](https://apps.apple.com/de/app/nfc21-tools/id1496636288). Is this possible?
No, this is not possible. Airtags cannot be written to and only work with the shortcuts app, as this uses the UID of the airtag and saves automations locally on the smartphone.
Airtags are not intended to be written with information. They contain a fixed link with write protection that leads to the website, which displays the serial number and the owner's name in lost mode. However, they can be used as NFC tags using the shortcuts app.
All desired automations or information must therefore be configured using the Shortcuts app. One disadvantage here is that automations have to be set up manually for each smartphone, as the automations from the Shortcuts app are only saved locally on the smartphone.
If you use alternative NFC apps in conjunction with normal NFC tags, all smartphones can perform automations without prior setup. This is because NFC apps can save information directly on NFC tags and do not use the UID.
