Can I still locate the AirTag if I use it as an NFC tag?
Airtags were primarily manufactured to be able to locate them. Does the NFC function interfere with tracking or can I track it and use it as an NFC tag at the same time?
Yes, this is possible. The locating function and readout function work independently of each other and with different technologies, which is why both can be used simultaneously.
Why is that? The location function on an airtag works primarily with Bluetooth technology, which has a long range. The airtag is located by the Bluetooth signal. In turn, the airtag is read via NFC, which requires a smartphone to be held close to the airtag.
The link to the website is also retained in lost mode and is permanently written to the airtag. If the Airtag is to be “written” by the app shortcuts, the app only uses the UID of the Airtag and does not change any content on the Airtag itself.
